"Ntandi village, Bundibugyo, Western Uganda", 2009
The Basua of Bundibugyo in Western Uganda are the direct descendants of the Efe ‘Pygmies’ in the Congo. Numbering only around 70, they were removed from the Semliki forests in the early 1990s when it became a nature reserve. Since then, the Sua have passed between numerous NGOs though various ill-concieved projects, and have recieved little government compensation. They are now literally fighting for their survival.
"Grace Cooking", 2009
These photographs were taken in 2009, while shooting a documentary about the Basua. Since we were last there, funding that was being provided by the EU has been withdrawn and their situation has deteriorated greatly. We are planning a follow-up visit in late 2011. You can read more about the documentary here.
